Inspired in part by the 1000 gold painted wooden statues of her in Sanjusangendo in Kyoto, Japan, where she is known as Kannon. Kuan Yin is the Mother of Mercy, a Bodhisattva whose image was used by Christians in Japan to represent Mary before Christianity was allowed in the country.
