Pachamama’
Auspiciously completed on #EarthDay, my new painting, the Andean World Mother, Pachamama. Created for the Earth Mother theme of this year’s The Goddess Conference, I wanted to focus not just on the birthing aspect but on the sustaining and destroying that she must do to maintain balance.
She is the the mother of mothers – Saramama (maize) and Cocamama (coca leaves) amongst them, and mother of mountains, where offerings are made to her. With the coming of Christianity, the Inca of Bolivia recognised their mountain mother in the conical dresses of the Black Virgin of Copacabana and prayed to her as Pachamama.
