Saint Melangell

This commissioned piece depicts early Welsh saint Melangell in her wooded safe haven of Pennant Melangell, Powys. She came there from Ireland, a virgin princess seeking solitude. Her peace was one day disturbed by the prince of Powys and his dogs on a hunting trip when the hare they were hunting came to Melangell and sheltered in her skirts. The prince was dazzled by the virgin’s holiness and granted her the land to build a sanctuary there, where she became abbess and was later known as the patron saint of hares. Acrylic on wood (12in x 18in)
