This piece is based on a saying that I came across whilst researching my Black Madonna book: “They tried to bury us. Thet didn’t know we were seeds”.
It’s commonly misattributed as being an old Mexican proverb but actually is a paraphrasing of a Greek poet and social critic in the 1970s.
However, its not hard to see why it is fitting to indigenous peoples, and particularly their treatment in the history of countries such as Mexico. The painting is a reflection of that sense of endurance through oppression. Copyright Nic Phillips 2018 (Acrylic on canvas 6in x 12in)
