The last of the Welsh saints for my book, this is St Illtyd Farchog – ‘Illtyd the Knight’, a 6th Century Welsh soldier who renounced his position and became a scholar and the founder of a monastic community at Llantwit Major, South Wales, shown in the background. The cross in the picture can be found in the church of St Illtyd and dates from the 9th Century. Copyright Nic Phillips 2014. Acrylic and leaf metal on wood (9in x 12in).
