The Cailleach

Cailleach web
The Cailleach is an ancient giantess/hag/crone goddess prevalent in a lot of Celtic folklore. Here she is pictured at Sliabh na Cailliege, Loughcrew, where she forms mounds by dropping giant boulders from her apron. At the forefront is a particular inscribed stone known as ‘the Hag’s Chair’. Behind her, the mysterious spirals of Newgrange swirl in the sky as the snows of winter start to drift in… (Acrylic on canvas 24in x 12in). Copyright Nic Phillips 2017
