I had several requests to do an icon of St Michael the Archangel. Possibly the most well known of the angels of the Bible and associated with many churches in high places throughout the world such as Mont St Michel in France and St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall, UK. He is normally depicted slaying the Devil in the form of a serpent or suppressing him under his foot. His flaming sword is one of his most distinctive features, and is depicted here on his shield, which is also an allusion to the cross of St George, who shares much of his symbolism. Acrylic and gold leaf on wood (14.5in x 11in).
