Queering Loki

‘Queering Loki’, featuring the very talented Enfys J. Book (@majorarqueerna).

Whilst I wasn’t planning on a Loki painting, they took up a fair chunk of my Odin chapter and eventually presented me with someone to manifest an image too when I met Enfys at this year’s Goddess Conference.

Like the model for ‘Queering Odin’, Enfys is a nonbinary author and it felt fitting to reference the original Odin image. So here is Loki, irreverently inserting their self as ‘Chapter 1.5’ of the Queering Deities book. Here’s what Enfys had to say about their relationship:

“my relationship with Loki, like the being themself, defies definition and has ambiguous purpose. The energy of Loki has lurked around the edges of my magickal perception for years, and only in the last year or two have they made themself more known to me in a direct way. They approached me in one of my meditations a year ago to say they wanted to work together, and after a few months of conversation, we developed a contract to work together for a year and a day in very specific ways, with guardrails around what was and was not acceptable for interfering with my life… The really strange thing is that Loki doesn’t seem to want anything terribly specific from me. They just want to be along for the ride as I work on my queer magickal writings and teaching. In speaking to devoted Heathen friends, they confirmed that sometimes this is how Loki rolls: They just want to throw some support behind something that seems to further their agenda in the world.

My personal interest in Loki is for a guide to help me on my gender journey, someone to help me find modes of expression and identity that are comfortable for me within the vast arena of “nonbinaryness.”

So I call to Loki, shapeshifter of fluid gender, and ask for guidance to find manners of expression where I am comfortable. I call to Loki to bring me self-acceptance and self-confidence in the ways in which I feel and express my gender. I call to Loki to remind me that I and my gender are Divine. And they respond with their wisdom, their presence, and their power.”
